How should I evaluate a GEO case study?

A useful GEO case study lets you trace a specific result back to its observations and the work actually delivered. Among 2,922 classified statements, Wrong About You separated 118 wrong or stale statements from 880 unverifiable ones in answers captured on 22 and 23 September 2026. Those are different evidence states; a supplier's case study should be just as clear about what its numbers establish.

What we measured

Measured. Wrong About You is a source-classification example, not a client success case. The method assessed 2,922 statements about 70 vendors from 22 and 23 September 2026 answers against vendor pages read on 8 October. It labelled 118 statements wrong or stale and 880 unverifiable. Team review remains in progress; neither group measures a supplier's commercial results.

For a metric-definition check, the September Index method kept naming and own-domain citation separate. Housecall Pro's field service record on 22 September retained 150 valid answers from ten fixed buyer questions, three repeats and ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It was named in 108, or 72.0 percent, with a Wilson 95 percent interval of 64.3 to 78.6 percent; its domain was cited in 43, or 28.7 percent, with an interval of 22.0 to 36.4 percent. These dated counts do not isolate the effect of an intervention.

What this means for you

Reasoned. Start with the claimed outcome. If the case study says visibility improved, ask what event changed, which questions were retained and whether the engine mix stayed comparable. Housecall Pro's 108 naming observations and 43 own-domain citations illustrate why a change of metric can alter a headline without adding another observed answer.

Then examine the delivery claim separately. Ask which source pages changed, when the changes were served and what the supplier controlled. A dated before-and-after observation can show a difference. It does not, by itself, isolate the change as the cause. If the case study reports a sale or lead, ask for the business record supporting that outcome rather than treating an AI mention as a purchase.

Finally, read the limitations. A result with a small base, missing answers or unresolved facts can still be useful when those conditions are visible. A polished percentage without its underlying record gives you less to assess. The studies cited here are public vendor observations, not client-success examples.

  • If you buy GEO: recompute one headline result using the supplied count and base.
  • If you present a case study: show the delivered change separately from any later outcome.
  • If you compare agencies: compare evidence quality and scope before comparing claimed gains.
