What should an initial GEO project measure?
Before a longer engagement, choose the decision your initial GEO project needs to support and the evidence you will accept. Housecall Pro was named in 108 of 150 answers captured on 22 September 2026, while its own domain was cited in 43 of 150. Those counts share a base but answer different questions about the delivered observation.
What we measured
Measured. The September Index method separates vendor naming from own-domain citation. Housecall Pro's field service record retained 150 valid answers from ten fixed buyer questions, three repeats on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, captured on 22 September 2026. Naming was 72.0 percent, with a Wilson 95 percent interval of 64.3 to 78.6 percent. Own-domain citation was 28.7 percent, with an interval of 22.0 to 36.4 percent. This is a published measurement example, not the result of a client project or a promised improvement.
What this means for you
Reasoned. Define the acceptance question before collecting a score. If you need to know whether the brand appears on a relevant buyer task, naming observations are useful. If you need to inspect the sources supporting the answer, retain the source list and distinguish your own domain from other cited hosts. Neither event alone establishes a lead or sale.
Agree on the outputs as well as the metric. A bounded initial project can deliver a dated observation set, transparent calculations and a small issue list that someone can act on. If implementation is included, name the specific source page and the check that will demonstrate the change is served. That keeps a measurement file and a published edit from becoming interchangeable completion claims.
Decide what would justify a longer engagement. The decision may depend on relevant questions, usable source evidence and a well-defined next task, rather than reaching an arbitrary visibility percentage. Record what would leave the decision unresolved, such as missing observations or unverified product facts.
This procurement choice comes before buying more work. Designing repeated measurements to estimate noise before a content change is a separate procedure; it should follow the collection and evidence requirements you have agreed.
- For a buyer: name the decision, event and acceptable output before approving the scope.
- For a supplier: deliver the records that make the initial finding inspectable.
- For an agency: separate a client's accepted deliverable from any forecast about later answers.

Use the Free 10-question check (one engine). No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance. Keep this bounded result beside the specific decision the initial project must support.
