Does an AI brand mention mean the product was recommended?

A brand mention does not by itself establish that the product was recommended for the buyer's need. In the Volume II collection captured 18 to 23 July 2026, 25 of 85 companies were cited from their own domain more often than they were named. That separate source event shows why you should read the role of a name rather than treating every appearance as a buying recommendation.

What we measured

Measured. The Volume II method used ten questions per company and one run per question on one engine. It scored brand naming and own-domain citation independently in a selected B2B software sample of 85 companies. Twenty-five were cited more often than named; 9 were cited despite never being named in their ten answers.

The data records those two events. It does not provide a recommendation-role score for every mention, and it does not establish which source caused an engine to choose a product.

These are 18 to 23 July 2026 observations, not a statement about every current answer or the September Index's later citation definition.

Our answer-study method, v1.1.

What this means for you

Reasoned. A name can serve different jobs in a paragraph. The answer might propose the product, identify a publisher whose page it used or describe another product's comparison. Extracting the same company string from each sentence does not preserve that difference.

Read the question and the surrounding words. Ask whether the answer actually offers the product as an option for the stated need. If the wording is conditional, preserve the condition. If you cannot tell, keep the role unknown instead of assigning an endorsement.

  • If you buy software: inspect the proposed use and qualifications before treating a named vendor as a candidate.
  • If you sell software: retain the context where the name appears, including any qualification or source-attribution role.
  • If you prepare a report: keep a naming count separate from a recommendation assessment and publish the rule for the latter.

The 25 of 85 result cannot supply a percentage of endorsed companies. It is relevant because source use and vendor appearance were separable in the same collection. A recommendation conclusion still needs the actual answer, not an assumption attached to the count.

Next step

When reading Free 10-question check (one engine), retain the sentence around a company name so you can inspect its role. No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance.

If that context reveals one incorrect or unsupported product description, Fix one answer, $490. Define the factual change without promising an endorsement.
