Can an AI answer cite a company without naming it?
Yes, under the independent naming and citation rules used in Volume II. Nine of 85 companies had their own domains cited while their brands were never named in their ten answers captured 18 to 23 July 2026. A website could therefore appear as evidence without its company appearing as a product option in that collection.
What we measured
Measured. The Volume II scoring method recorded two independent binary events for each answer: the company's brand named and its own domain cited. The sample covered 85 selected B2B software companies, ten questions each, with one run per question on one engine. Nine companies had zero naming observations and at least one own-domain citation.
This historical definition matters. The September Index's scoring method instead requires the vendor to be named and its domain cited in the same answer. You cannot use the nine historical cases as if they were exceptions to that later event definition.
The July result does not establish why an engine used a source or which page change would make its publisher a candidate.
Our answer-study method, v1.1.
What this means for you
Reasoned. Inspect the cited page separately from the answer's proposed products. A page may supply evidence about a category, a workflow or another company. Its appearance among sources does not require the answer to describe its publisher as a vendor option.
The useful report keeps both fields and their definitions. If you receive a citation total from a different release or platform, first check whether naming is a prerequisite. Otherwise an apparent contradiction may be only a change in what is counted.
- If you publish the source: preserve the cited URL and the answer that used it. Do not label the event as a recommendation without reading the context.
- If you report visibility: state the release and citation rule beside the number, especially when comparing historical data.
- If you buy software: separate the publishers of supporting material from the products the answer proposes for your need.
The same discipline applies when a domain supports several products. A domain match identifies a source relationship under a rule; it does not, by itself, establish which product claim was supported or whether that claim was sound.
