How should I structure headings for AI crawlers?
Use headings that tell a reader which task, product scope or evidence the section answers. A useful construction example is workflow fit: Study 7 found that criterion in 17 of 149 eligible construction answers captured on 22 September 2026. Those observations can inform a section's subject, but they do not show that a heading format improves crawler selection.
What we measured
Measured. Study 7 extracted criteria from the text before the first vendor name and retained supporting spans. The construction collection contained 92 criteria; workflow fit appeared in 17 answers, or 11.4 percent, with a descriptive Wilson 95 percent interval of 7.2 to 17.5 percent.
The derived base excludes one request-limit response, leaving 149 eligible answers from 150 scheduled. The criterion labels describe what those answers said, rather than independently validated buyer requirements. Team review remains in progress. The study neither changed page headings nor compared crawler behavior before and after an edit.
Reasoned. A heading can state what your page actually explains. In this example, a section called Construction workflow fit would need concrete, supported workflow information underneath it. The count does not supply those product facts for you.
Our answer-study method, v1.1.
What this means for you
Start with the page's one main question. Use its title to identify the decision, then place distinct subquestions beneath it. A heading should mark the material that follows, not promise an answer hidden on another page.
For a workflow section, explain which work the product supports, who performs it and the relevant boundary. If the available evidence concerns one edition or an integration, preserve that qualification in the text. Avoid turning an attractive section label into a feature claim the source does not support.
Use a consistent hierarchy so a reader can see which points belong together. Keep a source and its qualification near the claim it supports. Repeating the same keyword in several headings does not replace missing evidence or make a vague section more useful.
Read the page in order after the edit. If two headings lead to substantially the same explanation, combine them. If a section cannot answer its heading with the current evidence, narrow the heading or mark the gap for review. Evaluate the published outline for clarity; any later answer observation needs its own date and conditions.
- For an editor: make each heading a truthful label for the section below it.
- For an agency: accept an outline for coverage and clarity, without inventing a crawler-effect result.
