What is a Google AI Overview?
A Google AI Overview is an AI-generated part of Search that helps explain a topic and links to supporting web pages. It does not appear for every search: in our 4 August 2026 study, 258 of 280 main Google searches returned an Overview and 22 did not. That dated sample illustrates the distinction between running a search and receiving an AI answer.
What we measured
Reported. Google's AI-feature guide, read on 28 October 2026, describes Overviews as a way to get the gist of a complicated topic and explore links. Google says they appear when its systems judge them additive to classic Search. This describes the documented product, rather than a trigger rule we reverse-engineered.
Measured. Volume III recorded main searches separately from its repeat collection. Among the 280 main Google searches on 4 August, the answer-status field recorded 258 successful Overview results and 22 results without an Overview. The Volume III method and data preserve those outcomes. A result without an Overview is an observed search outcome, not a brand omitted from an existing Overview.
Reasoned. The search can still present other results when an Overview is absent. Neither 258 nor 22 supplies a present-day probability for an arbitrary query. The study used a particular historical question collection, and it did not establish why Google showed or withheld an Overview for each search.
Our answer-study method, v1.1.
What this means for you
When you inspect a Google result, first record whether an Overview appeared. Then record the names and source links inside that Overview if it did. This gives the reader an understandable sequence of observations.
Keep ordinary Search results outside an Overview-specific count. A product can appear elsewhere on the results page without being named in the generated answer you are measuring.
For a website, Google's current guide points to ordinary Search eligibility: an eligible supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Meeting those requirements does not guarantee that the page or product will appear in a particular Overview.

If an Overview does appear and carries an incorrect fact with a traceable source, Fix one answer, $490 can address that answer. It cannot promise that an Overview will appear.
