What counts as a brand mention in an AI answer?

A brand mention is a name matched in the answer under a stated rule, counted once for that brand in that answer. Housecall Pro was named in 108 of 150 valid field-service-management answers captured on 22 September 2026. That 72.0% naming rate measures presence, without judging whether the answer recommended the product or praised it.

What we measured

Measured. The September Index release uses case-insensitive exact matches for the recorded vendor name and approved name aliases, with letter and number boundaries. Ordinary-word names require a recorded qualifier nearby in the same sentence unless the canonical domain is cited. The rule is published so a reader can see what qualifies as a match.

The field-service sample comprised ten buyer questions, three scheduled runs and five engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Housecall Pro's 108 of 150 named answers has a descriptive 95% Wilson interval of 64.3% to 78.6%. Its separate own-domain citation count was 43 of 150, or 28.7%, with an interval of 22.0% to 36.4%.

An answer repeating “Housecall Pro” several times still contributes one named answer. Reasoned. This binary event is useful for a reproducible presence count, but does not capture position, tone, recommendation strength, factual accuracy or what a buyer did afterward. Those questions need their own evidence.

Every figure comes from the published method, v1.1.

What this means for you

Ask for the matching rule when reading a mention rate. Exact names, aliases and ordinary-word safeguards can change which answers qualify, even before any percentage is calculated.

Inspect examples around ambiguous names. A product name that is also a common word needs context; counting every occurrence can create false matches. Conversely, an undisclosed alias rule can miss relevant names.

Keep the answer as the counting unit when comparing with this release. A tally of repeated name strings is a different measure from 108 named answers, and it cannot be substituted into the same chart without changing its meaning.

Next step

Use Free 10-question check (one engine) to check which exact product name the answer contains, then inspect its context rather than treating presence as praise. No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance.

When a named answer describes the product incorrectly, Fix one answer, $490 can address that fact. Merely being named supplies no factual correction by itself.

Claiming or correcting a vendor record is free and never depends on a purchase.
