Why does the buyer question matter to an AI shortlist?
A shortlist answers the need in the buyer's question, so a category total can conceal an absence on that particular need. On 22 September 2026, Google AI Overviews named Procore in 0 of 3 answers about construction software for a small residential builder, but in 21 of 30 answers across the ten construction questions. The larger total cannot stand in for the smaller question-level result.
What we measured
Measured. The September Absence Index kept the engine, category and capture date fixed for this comparison. Its ten construction questions each had three scheduled answers. The small-residential-builder question supplied three of those thirty answers; it is part of the category total, rather than an independent comparison group.
Procore's 0 of 3 result has a descriptive 95% Wilson interval of 0.0% to 56.1%. Its 21 of 30 category result is 70.0%, with an interval of 52.1% to 83.3%. Buildertrend and Contractor Foreman were each named in all three answers to that specific question. These are counts of recorded names, with no ordering or product-quality score attached.
The release and matching method, published 23 September 2026, preserve the questions, three-run design and engine-level counts. Reasoned. The contrast shows why a reader needs the question beside the count. It does not isolate question wording as a causal treatment or establish that changing a website will change an answer.
Every figure comes from the published method, v1.1.
What this means for you
If you sell to residential builders, inspect that buyer condition before relying on a broad construction result. A need involving team size, work type or budget may deserve its own question in a measurement plan.
Keep a stable question set when comparing dates. Substituting an easier question changes what you measured, even if the headline category remains construction software.
Read a missing name as an observation about the captured answers. Three runs leave substantial uncertainty, and neither the absence nor the category total establishes whether Procore would suit a particular builder.
