Is llms.txt required for AI search visibility?

Google does not require a special AI text file for its Search AI features, according to its guidance read on 28 October 2026. Our separate field service collection recorded Housecall Pro's own domain cited in 43 of 150 answers captured on 22 September 2026. That count measures citations, not whether llms.txt was present or required.

What we measured

Measured. The September Index method collected ten fixed field service questions, three times on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Housecall Pro's own-domain citation rate was 43 of 150 valid answers, or 28.7 percent, with a descriptive Wilson 95 percent interval of 22.0 to 36.4 percent. The citation event required the vendor to be named and its domain cited in the same answer.

Reported. Google's AI feature guidance, read 28 October 2026, says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup are needed for these Search features. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion; this provider statement is separate from our citation observation.

What this means for you

Reasoned. Ask a supplier to identify the specific provider requirement behind a proposed mandatory task. A useful file, an optional publishing convention and a prerequisite for a particular search feature are different claims. The supplier should be able to show the current primary guidance for the last one.

For Google Search, first inspect the conditions its guidance actually names: crawl access, indexing, snippet eligibility and useful accessible content. An llms.txt deliverable should not silently replace those checks. A page can have a neatly formatted file while its important source content remains unavailable to the relevant search system.

Keep the provider boundary in your report. Google's statement does not describe every product or retrieval mode from another provider. If you need a different system's access rules, use that provider's current documentation and retain the date of the read.

You can still commission a maintained source guide as a defined website deliverable. Price and accept that work for what it contains and how it is checked, rather than treating its existence as a certificate of AI visibility.

  • For a buyer: request the named provider rule behind any requirement claim.
  • For a site owner: check the real page's crawl and indexing eligibility.
  • For an agency: distinguish an optional deliverable from a documented prerequisite.

Use the Free 10-question check (one engine). No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance. Treat its one-engine answer as an observation, not a certificate that a file is required.
