Should AI Overview rates include searches without an Overview?

Include searches without an Overview when measuring how often an Overview appeared; use a separate, explicit base if you are measuring names within displayed Overviews. On 4 August 2026, our main Google collection contained 258 Overview results and 22 results without one, from 280 searches. Removing those 22 would erase the very outcome a trigger rate needs to count.

What we measured

Measured. The Volume III method and data identify 280 main Google searches, distinct from repeat runs. Their status field records 258 successful Overview results and 22 without an Overview. For an appearance count, report 258 of 280. For analysis conditional on a displayed Overview, state the 258-answer base and the actual event being counted within it.

A different release needs its own base. The September Index, published 23 September, planned 2,100 answers across fourteen categories and five engines, with 2,095 valid answers and five excluded observations captured on 22 and 23 September. Its exclusions do not turn the August no-Overview searches into failed observations.

Reasoned. A completed search with no Overview and an unusable answer capture require different labels. The August and September collections used different methods and dates. This worked distinction supplies no missing naming numerator, and the two collections should not be combined into one rate.

Our answer-study method, v1.1.

What this means for you

Name the metric before choosing the denominator. “Overview appeared” asks about searches. “Vendor named in an Overview” asks about a vendor event and must state whether its base is all searches or only displayed Overviews.

Preserve the no-Overview count in the report even when the main table is conditional on generated answers. Otherwise a reader cannot tell whether a low naming count reflects the answer's contents or the absence of the generated surface.

Maintain separate counts for valid answers, no-Overview searches and technical exclusions. That small accounting step makes a later change in sample composition visible instead of presenting it as a brand's performance change.

When using Free 10-question check (one engine), keep the answer's availability status alongside any name count so the base remains inspectable. No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance.

If the available answer contains a factual error, Fix one answer, $490 addresses that answer. A missing generated surface has no statement to correct.
