How can a business be recommended by ChatGPT?

Search eligibility does not secure a ChatGPT recommendation. OpenAI says there is no way to guarantee top placement; you can check access and make the page answer a specific buyer need, then inspect what a later answer actually says. ChatGPT named HubSpot CRM in 24 of 30 CRM answers in our 22 September 2026 panel. That is evidence of naming in those questions, not a finding that HubSpot was the best purchase.

What we measured

Measured. The September Index used ten CRM buyer questions, repeated three times on ChatGPT. The 30 valid answers form the base for HubSpot CRM's 24 appearances. The question set includes different company sizes and purchase situations; the recorded field tells us whether the name appeared.

Reported. OpenAI's search help article, read on 29 October 2026, describes search inclusion and the limits on placement. It tells publishers to allow OAI-SearchBot access and traffic from the published searchbot addresses. Its bot guide treats search crawling separately from training crawling.

Our naming count cannot prove that a particular content change will cause ChatGPT to recommend a business.

What this means for you

Reasoned. Read the recommendation itself. Does the answer put your business forward for the buyer's stated need, merely include it in a list, or mention it while discussing an alternative? The 24 naming events do not decide between those interpretations for you.

HubSpot's count changes with the buyer question: ChatGPT named it in all three answers about managing a complex sales pipeline, but in none of the three asking what a buyer should evaluate in a CRM. A general evaluation question can be answered without naming a vendor. Its zero therefore needs the question beside it before you call it a missed recommendation.

The traditional-CRM alternatives question supplied another three ChatGPT answers without a HubSpot name. For a CRM vendor, rewriting a product page to pursue that question may miss the buyer's request for an alternative approach. The zero identifies what to read; it does not explain the engine's reason.

For an agency working on a complex-pipeline page, begin with the three saved answers where HubSpot did appear. Identify whether each names it as an option and which source supports the relevant pipeline claim. That gives the client a specific claim to substantiate instead of treating the 24 appearances as proof of a sales outcome.

OpenAI's access guidance addresses another question: whether a publisher's page is eligible for search inclusion. It does not classify those HubSpot answers as recommendations. If a later ChatGPT refresh changes the complex-pipeline answer, retain both versions and check the actual wording before attributing the change to your page.
