How do I get a Google AI Overview?

On 4 August 2026, 22 of our 280 main Google searches returned no AI Overview. You cannot make an Overview appear for every query. If you mean getting your own page included as a source, Google's published guidance requires the page to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; it does not offer a separate guaranteed inclusion route.

What we measured

Measured. The State of GEO, Volume III search protocol records 22 no-Overview outcomes in the main Google AI Overview search set. The base is the 280 main searches, not the repeat searches or a later collection. A no-Overview result is a recorded outcome and stays in that count.

Reported. Google's AI features guidance, read on 29 October 2026, says AI Overviews do not always trigger. For a supporting link, the page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. The guide says existing SEO practices apply, with no extra technical requirements, special schema or new AI text file required for these features.

This collection cannot show that a specific page change will trigger an Overview or earn a source link.

What this means for you

Reasoned. Distinguish the two missing things. A search with no Overview supplies no Overview source list to inspect. A search with an Overview that omits your page is a different observation. The 22 records in our main set concern the first case, so they are not 22 measured failures of your website.

For a publisher, check the ordinary Search state before commissioning an Overview-specific file. Google's guide makes indexed, snippet-eligible content the starting point. If your page is excluded from the Search index or its snippet is restricted, an llms.txt file does not answer that eligibility problem under the published guidance.

The guide's lack of special schema requirements also changes the buying question. Ask what a proposed markup edit fixes on the actual page. A promise to add a special Overview schema has no requirement to point to in this guidance; a concrete correction to ordinary page content can be inspected on its own terms.

For an agency reporting on a query set, retain the no-Overview status rather than assigning a source-share result to it. In our 280-search main set, that distinction is visible because the 22 outcomes are counted separately. Do not replace the missing source list with a guessed citation result.
