How can a page get cited by ChatGPT?
Check that OAI-SearchBot can reach the page and that your host allows OpenAI's published searchbot traffic; those are OpenAI's stated search eligibility checks, not a promise of citation. In our CRM capture of 22 September 2026, 24 of the 30 ChatGPT answers named HubSpot CRM. Across all five engines, 34 answers cited the HubSpot domain, from a base of 150 answers. Keep those different events and bases separate when you judge whether your page was cited.
What we measured
Reported. OpenAI's web-search help, read on 29 October 2026, names crawl access and host permission for its published searchbot IP addresses as eligibility checks. It also says top placement cannot be guaranteed. Its bot documentation distinguishes OAI-SearchBot, used for search, from GPTBot, used for training; their controls are independent.
Measured. The September release contains ten CRM questions repeated three times per engine. The 24/30 figure is ChatGPT naming alone. The 34/150 figure counts answers citing HubSpot's own domain across all five engines, not ChatGPT citations alone.
These observations cannot tell us whether changing crawl permission would cause your page to receive a citation.
What this means for you
Reasoned. Inspect the HubSpot domain field. The 34 own-domain citation answers are pooled across five engines, while the 24 ChatGPT appearances count names. A ChatGPT-only claim about the page's citations needs that engine's actual source links; neither of those published totals supplies it.
For a page you control, have the person responsible for the host check both the searchbot rule and the network restriction. A robots file allowing access is only half of OpenAI's stated eligibility check if the host rejects the traffic. Treat training access separately; allowing GPTBot is not the searchbot control described in the help article.
The HubSpot example becomes narrower at question level. ChatGPT named it in all three answers about a revenue team replacing spreadsheets, and in none of the three answers asking about alternatives to a traditional CRM. Those are naming cells from the same capture, so neither supplies the missing ChatGPT-only citation count.
For an agency preparing a page about replacing spreadsheets, the matching CRM question supplies the buyer wording behind that three-of-three observation. Inspect its actual answer links before writing that HubSpot's own page was the source. Our 34 pooled own-domain citations cannot settle the source of those particular ChatGPT answers.
