Is agent-to-agent commerce a viable business opportunity?

No published protocol alone establishes that agent-to-agent commerce is a viable business opportunity. Our Agent Gap study reached 44 of 70 initial public demo-path tasks on 6 October 2026; reaching a handoff was not a purchase, and it supplied no evidence of willingness to pay.

What we measured

Measured. The Agent Gap study design asks whether an assistant can complete specified tasks on software vendors' public sites. Its S3 task follows the demo path. Reaching that endpoint records a discoverable buying step, rather than an order, authorized charge or fulfilled service.

Reported. The Agentic Commerce Protocol architecture, read on 30 October 2026, describes four parties: buyer, agent, seller and payment provider. The buyer reviews the checkout and authorizes payment. The agent orchestrates the session; the seller remains the merchant of record and handles inventory and fulfillment. Payment providers process charges and enforce the delegated allowance constraints.

Reasoned. This is a concrete transaction design, but its existence does not identify a paying customer for your proposed service. An assistant reaching a seller and a buyer authorizing a purchase occupy different points in the chain. Agent Gap observes the earlier public-site boundary, not the protocol's completed checkout.

What this means for you

Locate the proposed service. If it helps an assistant discover a vendor's demo route, the relevant output is a reached route with the correct destination. If it operates a checkout, the offer must instead say which transaction responsibility it performs and who remains responsible for delivery. Calling both “agent commerce” conceals the event a customer would pay for.

Keep the buyer visible. The architecture assigns the human a review and authorization role; it does not describe two unconstrained bots deciding to spend independently. A business plan that assumes payment follows automatically from an agent's intent has skipped an explicit protocol step.

The protocol's payment boundary is specific: Delegate Payment carries allowance constraints for amount, currency, expiration and merchant. Its seller component calculates tax and shipping, processes payment and fulfills the order as merchant of record. A service built around that interface needs to identify which of those named responsibilities it performs. Agent Gap's Procore S3 record, by contrast, ends at a reached public demo path on 6 October 2026; its recorded fields are found, correct and reached, rather than an order or payment result.
