How do Google AI Overviews affect website visibility?
1,352 checked-name appearances across 415 retained Google AI Overviews answers show one form of visibility: being named inside an answer. Our September Index, collected on 22 and 23 September 2026, did not measure whether that exposure increased or reduced visits to the named companies’ websites.
What we measured
Measured. The Index design covers fourteen software categories, with ten buyer questions and three repeats per engine. Its Overview name counts describe the checked vendors in retained answer text. They are not 1,352 visitors, and the 415-answer base is not a website audience.
Reported. Google's site-owner guide, read on 29 October 2026, describes supporting links in Overviews and says AI-feature traffic is included in Search Console's overall Web performance data. That reporting boundary does not supply a separate Overview click total simply because an answer names a company.
Reasoned. A named company, a cited domain and a clicked link are different events. A vendor may be visible in prose without an own-domain link, or its website may support an answer without receiving a recommendation. The Index can describe the first two kinds of observation; it cannot convert them into a measured website impact.
What this means for you
Look at Procore. In the construction category, its name appears in 21 of 30 retained Overview answers. That engine-specific count describes answer text; the vendor's separate pooled record reports 109 named appearances and 30 own-domain citations across 150 answers on five engines. The three figures refer to different columns or bases, so none supplies a website visitor count.
The named source destinations make the difference visible. The construction export records capterra.com as a cited host in 34 of its 150 pooled answers, while Procore's vendor record identifies procore.com and learn.procore.com as its cited domains. A directory-host observation and a vendor's own-domain citation are distinct records, even when both concern construction software.
For website performance, Google's inspected guide puts AI-feature results inside Search Console's Web search type. It also points to combining Search Console and Analytics data for site behavior and conversions. That is the reporting route it documents; the September Index instead exports vendor names, question-level counts and cited domains. Its Procore row has no click, session or conversion field.
