Why don’t Google AI Overviews appear for every search?
If a search shows ordinary results without an AI Overview, that alone does not show a fault in your website or account: Google makes Overview display conditional. Our September Index recorded one explicit no-Overview result among thirty hotel-software targets on 22 September 2026; the capture does not identify its cause.
What we measured
Measured. The original Index method and records preserve the hotel category's first run of question ten as “no AI Overview returned for this query.” That question asks about a hotel group with eight properties. The category retained twenty-nine Overview answers from thirty targets, keeping the missing surface outside its named-vendor base.
Reported. Google's site-owner guide, read on 29 October 2026, says Overviews are shown when its systems judge them additive to ordinary Search and often do not trigger. Its separate Overview help describes the consumer feature and its responses.
Reasoned. Google's general display explanation does not diagnose the hotel record. The captured absence cannot establish a region, account setting, publisher control or helpfulness judgment as its particular cause.
What this means for you
Keep the missing surface distinct. The hotel record has an empty answer and an explicit no-Overview exclusion; it is not a returned answer that considered hotel vendors and named none. Converting that slot into a zero for every vendor would change the meaning of a naming rate.
The original question's base makes this visible. The hotel-group-with-eight-properties question retains fourteen answers when all five engines and three repeats are pooled, because that one Overview target was excluded. The category's other buyer questions still belong to their own recorded bases. One failed trigger should not make the entire hotel category disappear from the sample.
The veterinary category records a different kind of exception: valid results could not be obtained. That wording is not the hotel's explicit no-Overview outcome. Preserving both descriptions lets you distinguish an unavailable collection result from a specifically absent Search feature without assigning either a made-up vendor recommendation.
