How does Google AI Mode change keyword research?

A keyword is not a record of every search Google AI Mode may use to answer it. Google describes related searches across subtopics; our September Index scheduled 420 Mode targets on 22 September 2026, counting returned buyer-question observations rather than the engine’s internal searches or keyword volume.

What we measured

Reported. Google's AI-feature guidance, read on 29 October 2026, says Mode and Overviews may use query fan-out across subtopics and data sources. It describes nuanced questions and complex comparisons that might previously have required several searches. The guidance does not expose an internal search count for each returned answer.

Measured. The Index question design fixes ten buyer questions across fourteen categories, repeated three times for Mode. Those inputs provide the 420 scheduled targets. They make comparisons of returned names and sources possible, while leaving the internal expansion unobserved.

Reasoned. Keyword research still needs to identify the buyer's task. A short head term can label a category, while the complete question preserves the constraint that makes the answer useful. Treating the two strings as interchangeable would change what a repeated answer check actually asks.

What this means for you

Keep the buyer's task. The Index's construction question for a small residential builder differs from its mid-sized-general-contractor question. Both share the construction-software head term, but the buyer size is part of the fixed input. Removing that constraint would collapse two actual research questions before either answer was compared.

The question set also separates a Procore-versus-Buildertrend comparison for a small general contractor from Kahua versus e-Builder for an owner running capital projects. These are different buyer roles and comparison sets. They suggest different source material to examine; the shared category label does not make an owner's capital-project needs interchangeable with a contractor's.

Engine choice remains visible in those inputs. For the small-residential-builder question, Mode names Procore in all three collected repeats, while ChatGPT names it in none. The saved Mode input did not contain a Procore recommendation request. That actual difference belongs in the answer evidence beside the buyer question; neither the name's appearance nor its absence reports how many internal searches were issued.
