How do people use Google AI Mode?
People can use Google AI Mode to explore a question, compare options and ask follow-ups, according to Google’s consumer help. Our September Index scheduled 420 ordinary AI Mode software-buyer targets on 22 September 2026; those fixed questions illustrate one use, rather than measuring how often the public uses each feature.
What we measured
Reported. Google’s AI Mode help, read on 29 October 2026, describes questions entered with text, voice, images and files, followed by further questions. It explains that Mode can divide a complex question into subtopics and search across sources before returning a response with links.
Measured. Our original Index release assigns ten buyer questions to each of fourteen software categories, with three Mode repeats per question. That produces 420 scheduled targets. They are researcher-selected software questions, not a count of consumers, searches inside Google’s system or follow-up conversations.
Reasoned. The public help explains supported uses, while the Index shows a deliberately bounded software-selection use. Neither source supplies a population breakdown of what people do in Mode.
What this means for you
Consider the buyer’s situation. The Index’s hotel question about a group with eight properties carries a constraint that would be lost in a search for hotel software alone. That is a concrete example of a comparison question with context, rather than proof that longer questions receive better answers.
If you want to return to that question, Google describes a separate history control. Its help says enabling history and personalized recommendations lets people pick up previous Mode searches. Without that setting, Mode can still be accessed, but those earlier searches cannot be resumed through that history experience.
Google documents questions about a specific webpage too: paste its URL into the Ask anything bar and ask about the page. The same help identifies a Chrome route for adding browser tabs to a question. Those documented page inputs are different from the fixed text questions in our released panel.
For voice input, the help places the microphone in the Ask anything bar and uses the same control for a new question or a follow-up. Its image route uses the upload menu and also supports drag-and-drop or pasting an image.
