How can I verify that an AI visibility tracker uses live answers?

On 4 August 2026, our Volume III study collected 18 of 280 scheduled ChatGPT main answers before a recorded credit stop. To verify a tracker’s live-answer claim, inspect its collection receipt, saved response and cache settings; a dashboard refresh cannot establish that a new answer was collected.

What we measured

Measured. The Volume III study design preserves the main collection separately from later repeat observations. The eighteen collected main answers are actual responses. The remaining scheduled slots cannot be counted as answers that omitted a vendor, because the recorded stop prevented their collection.

Reported. SerpApi's Overview documentation, read on 30 October 2026, says identical queries and parameters may use a cache that expires after one hour. It documents a bypass setting, processing, success and error states, and collection metadata. This is a named provider's documented behavior, not a claim that every tracker uses that provider or the same cache.

Reasoned. “Updated today” could refer to a report calculation, an imported file or an actual retrieval. The underlying response record is needed to tell those events apart. An error and an answer with no brand mention must remain separate even when both leave the dashboard's mention counter unchanged.

What this means for you

Read the status field. SerpApi names search_metadata.status for the Processing, Success or Error result, and search_metadata.id for the collection identifier. Its example response also exposes created_at and processed_at. These are fields a tracker using that interface can retain with the returned text; the dashboard's own refresh label is not one of those collection fields.

The same documentation makes no_cache false by default, allowing an identical query and parameter set to use the one-hour cache. Setting it true requests a fetch despite the cache; the guide says it cannot be combined with async. A report claiming a new SerpApi retrieval needs the actual setting and returned metadata, rather than inferring freshness from different wording in a chart.

Volume III supplies a separate, inspectable collection example. Its main ChatGPT row Q0001 has status ok and the timestamp 4 August 2026 at 05:28:15.425 UTC. That row belongs to the eighteen collected answers, while the planned panel still contains 280 questions. The study retains question ID, run ID and timestamp as distinct fields rather than assigning the whole planned panel a successful collection time.
