Can ads appear in Google AI Overviews?

Yes. Google documents ads within or alongside AI Overviews, with Sponsored labeling that separates them from organic content. Our September Index counted 1,352 checked-name appearances across 415 retained Overview answers on 22 and 23 September 2026; those answer-text counts are not an ad-placement or advertising-spend measure.

What we measured

Reported. Google's ads help, read on 30 October 2026, says paid advertising does not influence its organic AI responses. It distinguishes ads within an Overview from standard Search ads above or below it, and notes that layouts can change as Google tests them.

The same guide dates the geographical and language conditions: ads within Overviews are described for English in listed markets, while ads above or below them have broader availability. Reasoned. A statement that ads can appear therefore does not establish that a particular reader will receive an in-answer placement for every query or country.

Measured. The Index method records checked software names in retained buyer-answer text. A single answer can contain several checked vendors, which is why the name-appearance total exceeds the answer base. The collection did not audit ad auctions, campaign eligibility or advertiser payments.

What this means for you

Read the label. A screenshot containing a vendor name is incomplete evidence for a claim about paid or organic visibility unless it also shows where that name appeared. The surrounding Sponsored marker and the boundary of the answer matter more than whether the brand appears somewhere on the screen.

Keep paid reporting separate. Google's guide says these AI-surface ad metrics are included in standard campaign reporting. That does not make the Index's answer count a substitute for an advertising report, and it does not isolate an Overview placement from every other campaign result. A reported ad click and a name in generated prose remain distinct observations.
