How should a local business respond when ChatGPT cites ranking-list pages?

The 17 September 2026 agency-list audit records 29/32 pages whose publisher also appeared in the list. When ChatGPT cites a local ranking list, inspect its owner, city and selection date before treating its ordering as a statement about your service. Start with the page the answer actually cites.

What we measured

Measured. Our agency-list publication audit counts each list page once, including separate pages from the same publisher. The public receipt preserves 29 Yes, two No and one Parent company listed status across 32 pages. The six criteria inspect disclosure, selection criteria, sources for claims, dates, prices and corrections. Broadcastwell publishes this comparison and is outside the scored table. This B2B publication audit does not measure local rankings, agency quality, client outcomes or ChatGPT's selection cause.

Reported. OpenAI's ChatGPT Search guidance, read on 29 October 2026, describes inline citations and a Sources button for supporting links. Google's AI-feature guidance, read that day, includes keeping Business Profile information current and matching structured data to visible page text.

Reasoned. Publisher interest belongs alongside the city and selection date in the record you make of a cited local list. The audit's self-inclusion column gives you a concrete disclosure question to ask of that page, rather than a rule that every published ranking is independent.

What this means for you

Open the cited page. Use the inline citation or Sources link to identify the specific list URL, then compare the sentence in ChatGPT's answer with the list entry. If a page's title names a different city from the area your business serves, keep that mismatch with the citation. Rewriting your own service area to resemble that list would change a business fact to fit the source.

Read who made the selection and when. Our audit separates the publisher's own inclusion from the distinct Parent company listed status; apply that relationship question to the local list's author and entries. A ranking headed by its publisher and one containing a related company present different disclosure details. A selection date also belongs with the listed opening hours or service description, so a historical entry is not silently treated as your current business record.

For an incorrect phone number, opening time or service-area statement, identify the exact claim that needs correction rather than trying to reproduce the list's order on your website. Put the accurate detail on the relevant public business page and keep the same detail in its structured data. Google's cited guidance specifically includes current Business Profile information; that supplies a named business record to reconcile with a local list's outdated entry.
