Are Google AI Overviews available in France?
Yes. Google announced AI Overviews in France on 22 July 2026, while explaining that an Overview appears only when its systems find one useful. Our separate September Index retained 415 Google AI Overviews answers from 420 scheduled targets on 22 and 23 September 2026.
What we measured
Reported. The France launch announcement, read on 29 October 2026, describes Overviews and AI Mode arriving on desktop, mobile and the Google app. It also distinguishes a short Overview from the longer conversational exchange available through Mode. These are named Search experiences, rather than two names for the same result.
Measured. The September Index scheduled fourteen software categories, ten buyer questions and three repeats for each engine. Its Overview records retained 415 answers. Of the five exclusions, four recorded that no Overview was returned; the remaining veterinary-practice-management result said valid results could not be obtained. Calling all five exclusions an absent Overview would erase that difference.
Reasoned. A country launch and a returned answer are separate observations. Google's France announcement establishes the reported availability date; our Index records demonstrate why an answer collection must retain query-level outcomes. The Index was not a French availability experiment and cannot estimate a French reader's chance of seeing an Overview.
What this means for you
If you are in France and see ordinary Search results, keep the exact query with that observation. A blank place where you expected an Overview does not contradict the July launch announcement. Google's own explanation makes the display conditional on the query.
Check the surface name. The same France article describes a follow-up from an Overview into AI Mode. An answer obtained after that transition belongs to Mode; adding it to an Overview-only count would mix the two experiences despite the continuous conversation.
For a French publisher, the announcement also describes a Search Console control for participation in generative Search features, distinct from ordinary ranking. That France-specific statement should travel with its country and date. It should not become a claim that every publisher account worldwide exposes the same control, or that using it changes an unrelated organic ranking.
