Can Google AI Overview answers be changed?
Yes, Google AI Overview answers can change, but a publisher cannot directly edit the generated answer. In our 4 August 2026 repeat study, the vendor-set overlap score averaged 0.499 across 62 Overview pairs; that observed variation was not a test of website edits or feedback.
What we measured
Measured. The Volume III study design preserves the original and repeat responses used to compare sets of vendor names. Jaccard overlap measures intersection divided by union. A pair with different names can therefore lower the mean without showing that a publisher did anything between the two observations.
Reported. Google's Overview help, read on 29 October 2026, explains how a reader can provide feedback about a response. Its site-owner guide separately describes snippet controls and Search eligibility. These are different actions: feedback reports an issue, whereas publisher controls govern use or preview of site content.
Reasoned. A factual correction to a source page gives a future answer a corrected document to consult. Our repeat pairs cannot establish that a particular correction, feedback report or preview setting will change an Overview.
What this means for you
Read the linked page. Google's help distinguishes checking supporting web links from reporting the generated Overview. It recommends consulting those links and other Search results. For you as a publisher, that source page is where to check whether the company statement is actually wrong before treating the generated Overview as evidence that your own page needs an edit.
The same help page describes the Overview's thumbs-down control and its Report a problem option, with an issue category and space for details. Google says the submitted feedback includes the most recent query and search results. That is a report about a particular returned result, rather than an editor in which a publisher supplies replacement Overview text.
Snippet controls also have a different purpose. The site-owner guide names nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex as ways to limit displayed information or eligibility. They do not supply replacement wording for an Overview. Record the exact source change or control alongside its date, then keep any later response as a new observation with its own names and citations. Do not replace the original answer in the evidence record.
