Why is Google AI Mode not working?
If your AI Mode screen shows a request-limit message, that notice is more informative than the label 'not working'. Our derived Study 7 coding excluded one of 420 scheduled AI Mode targets from 22 September 2026 as a request-limit response. A missing entry or a links-only result needs a different check against Google's help.
What we measured
Measured. The AI Written RFP study protocol coded answers for buyer criteria. Its Google AI Mode collection scheduled 420 targets across fourteen software categories, all captured on 22 September 2026. The later coding included 419 and excluded the third run of a construction comparison because the stored text was a request-limit response. That one capture cannot diagnose your account or establish a current Google outage.
The original September Index record still retains its 420 Mode targets. The later exclusion does not alter those original bytes. Study 7's inclusion decision records whether the returned text qualifies for buyer-answer coding.
Reported. Google's AI Mode help, read on 29 October 2026, lists supported countries, territories and languages. It also describes a result consisting of web links when confidence in an AI response's quality or helpfulness is insufficient. The page warns that Search settings are being updated and may not match the reader's current experience.
What this means for you
Reasoned. For a request-limit notice, preserve the displayed condition before calling the result an empty answer. Keep the wording. Record when it appeared and which AI Mode option you were using. In our study, the returned text was excluded from buyer-criterion coding rather than treated as a useful comparison with no named vendors.
If the AI Mode entry itself is missing, compare the relevant country and language with Google's published list. The help separates general AI Mode access from conditions for particular features and model options. A requirement attached to one option should not become a claim about every AI Mode user. The study's 420 targets are a research base, not an allowance for your account.
If AI Mode returns links without a generated explanation, use the help's description of that fallback when recording the event. A links-only result and a request-limit response are different observations. Quote what the screen actually supplied instead of assigning the same failure label to both. For a visibility report, retain that result type beside the buyer question so a technical notice does not become a false vendor-absence observation.

For a separate check of a public buyer answer, use the Free 10-question check (one engine). No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance.
When that answer contains one incorrect public product fact, Fix one answer, $490. Keep the correction tied to its source rather than treating it as Google account support.
