Is there an API for Google AI Overviews?
On 30 October 2026, SerpApi documented a third-party API that collects Google AI Overview blocks, distinct from generating a Search-grounded reply. Our September Index retained 415 Overview answers against a scheduled base of 420 on 22 and 23 September 2026; collection success belongs in any such API report.
What we measured
Reported. The SerpApi documentation, read on 30 October 2026, describes an Overview block returned with its Search results or retrieved through a separate request. The latter uses a page reference that expires within one minute. It documents text blocks and references, and distinguishes a successful result from a processing state or error.
Google's separate Search-grounding documentation, read on the same date, describes searching and synthesizing a model response with source annotations. That is a developer generation interface. Reasoned. The presence of Google Search in both descriptions does not make the generated text a collected consumer Overview.
Measured. Under the original Index design, four scheduled Overview targets explicitly returned no Overview; another failed to provide valid results. The 415 retained answers therefore cannot be replaced with a denominator that silently treats all five exclusions as vendor absences. We did not run either interface.
What this means for you
Name the output first. If your report says it measures Overviews, its source should identify the returned Overview block, associated query and collection outcome. A freshly generated grounded answer can be useful, but calling it an Overview would change what the report claims to observe.
The collection settings matter too. SerpApi documents a one-hour cache for identical queries and parameters, with a separate setting to bypass it. A new dashboard timestamp does not establish a new underlying collection. Retaining the source response and its status lets a reviewer distinguish a cached answer from a failed collection without guessing from the prose.
