How does GEO change the work of a traditional SEO agency?

Google's AI-features guide keeps SEO fundamentals in place for AI Overviews and AI Mode; GEO adds work on the answers and references you report to a client. In our September Index, HubSpot's site appeared as a reference in 6 of 30 CRM Overview answers captured on 22 September 2026.

What we measured

Measured. The Index release and method use ten fixed CRM questions with three Overview returns each. We count a HubSpot-domain reference once per answer, giving 6/30. HubSpot was also named in 20/30 answers; naming and linking are different observations. This panel does not measure agency demand, revenue or a change in search traffic.

Reported. Google's guide, read on 29 October 2026, says ordinary SEO practices remain relevant. A supporting-link page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet, with no additional AI-specific technical requirements. Its examples include important content in text and structured data that matches visible content.

Reasoned. The six HubSpot reference records give an agency an answer-level reporting unit alongside its page-level SEO work. They identify captured answers containing a site reference, rather than visits to the referenced pages.

What this means for you

Keep the crawl work. Google's guidance still addresses robots.txt, hosting access, internal links and the page's textual content. An agency handling those tasks can explain them to an AI-search client through the same documented eligibility requirements, without inventing a separate technical condition for an Overview link.

Add the actual referenced page to your answer report. The six HubSpot cases point to two product paths: four records reference /products/sales, while two reference /products/crm. That makes the retained URL useful when a client asks which product page an Overview used. The answer's wording, question and linked path provide evidence that a brand-name tally alone leaves out.

Traffic reporting has a different source. Google's guide places appearances in AI features within Search Console's overall search traffic, under the Performance report's Web search type. An agency's six-of-thirty reference count describes its captured answer panel; Search Console's Web report describes the site's recorded search performance.

Use the Free 10-question check (one engine) for a separate dated company-answer sample. No email is needed; runs are limited per network and per day, and by the site's daily allowance.

For one documented company-fact error, Fix one answer, $490. Keep the retained answer and its supporting public source with the correction.

For an agency report, Agency Deadline Audit, $490 per client report. The 26 October 2026 terms specify ten agreed questions, three runs on each of five engines, valid answers and exclusions separately, a white-label report and one paste-ready change of 250 words or fewer. Your agency implements the change; full-page deployment is not included.

Every figure comes from the published method, v1.1.
