Do YouTube transcripts affect LLM citations?
21 of 148 eligible answers cited a YouTube URL in our 23 October 2026 PHP2Shell study, but the data does not establish whether a transcript affected those citations. The collection preserves returned answers and source URLs.
What we measured
Measured. The PHP2Shell study method and complete answers scheduled ten questions, three returns and five engines. Two Overview targets were excluded, leaving 148 eligible answers. We counted an eligible answer once when its citations contained a YouTube-domain URL, even if it contained several video links.
| Engine | Answers with a recorded YouTube URL | Eligible-answer base |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 0 | 30 |
| Claude | 0 | 30 |
| Perplexity | 0 | 30 |
| Google AI Overviews | 12 | 28 |
| Google AI Mode | 9 | 30 |
The final grading records classify eighteen of those twenty-one answers Incomplete, two Correct and one Wrong. The capture did not compare edited transcripts.
Reasoned. A cited video is an observed source reference. Its presence can be counted alongside the answer's grade.
What this means for you
Count the returned answers. Two Mode returns to the opening fix question contain the same watch URL, ending BAoKuAB2h_E. They contribute two answer observations, rather than two distinct videos. Other retained sources use YouTube's shorts path; the collection preserves that URL form without supplying a transcript field.
The engine bases matter. The Overview column has twenty-eight eligible answers because two targets were excluded; Mode retains thirty. Pooling their twenty-one citing answers with the other engines gives the 148-answer base above. It would be a different measure to divide by the number of unique video IDs or by all scheduled targets.
