How do ads in Google AI Overviews affect organic traffic?
On 22 and 23 September 2026, our original Index recorded 1352 checked-vendor name appearances across 415 valid Google AI Overviews answers. These are answer observations, not organic click records. Google's ads documentation describes Sponsored placements; it does not quantify their effect on organic site traffic.
What we measured
Measured. The September release and method use fourteen categories and repeated fixed buyer questions. The original Overview base retains 415 valid answers from 420 targets; five targets were excluded from that base. The 1352 total adds checked-vendor presence across answers. We did not measure ad exposure or changes in organic clicks in this panel.
Reported. Google's ads guide, read on 30 October 2026, says ads in Overviews and AI Mode carry a Sponsored label and are visually distinct from organic content. Ads can appear within or alongside commercially relevant responses, while ordinary Search ads can appear above or below an Overview. Paid advertising does not influence the organic AI response, according to the guide.
Reasoned. A statement about how Google generates the organic response does not measure where a person clicks on a page containing that response and ads. Nor can our vendor-name total establish how many people saw or clicked a Sponsored placement.
What this means for you
Google's ad reporting aggregates campaign metrics. It includes impressions, clicks, conversions and cost from queries that trigger ads in AI features, alongside other eligible campaign activity. The guide also places those queries in the aggregate search-terms report. Those paid-report totals do not supply an organic-click change for a particular Overview.
The matching description explains which ad observation a traffic comparison would need. Google describes direct matching to a commercial query and contextual matching to both the query and the generated response. An exploratory question can therefore lead to a Sponsored placement through the response's commercial context, rather than only through an explicitly product-seeking query.
