Can I use ChatGPT as a CRM?

If you need a customer system of record, ChatGPT can be an interface to HubSpot's documented CRM connection; the records still live in the CRM. The AI written RFP, our published study, found the authoritative-system-of-record criterion in 1 answer from its CRM panel of 150. That panel was captured on 22 September 2026. That requirement is different from keeping a useful sales conversation in a chat.

What we measured

Measured. The Study 7 method codes buyer criteria stated before a vendor name. Its CRM system-of-record criterion occurs in one distinct answer, with a published interval of 0.1% to 3.7%. The retained evidence gives a record ID and offsets rather than a literal quoted passage. Team review: in progress.

Reported. HubSpot's ChatGPT connector guide, updated on 19 October and read on 29 October 2026, describes reading, creating and updating CRM records, including contacts and deals, and logging activities. It lists Tasks among the supported activities and applies the user's existing HubSpot permissions.

Reasoned. A chat interface can operate on an existing record system without becoming that system. Our buyer-answer coding does not test the connector or establish that a conversation can replace a complete CRM.

What this means for you

Keep the record location explicit. HubSpot says a created record is confirmed with a link to the CRM record; its Audit Log attributes actions to both the user and connector. That is a different object from a paragraph that merely describes a customer or proposes the next sales step.

The documented write boundary is concrete. HubSpot limits bulk create or update requests to ten records, and its object table marks no Delete action for Contacts or Deals. The guide also says custom validation rules, including pipeline-stage and association-label validations, are not applied through these writes. A prompt that changes a deal stage therefore is not evidence that the ordinary validation rule ran.

The same source restricts access when Sensitive Data is enabled and says new object permissions require administrator approval and user reconnection. Its object table lists custom objects, while an older FAQ passage says custom objects are not yet available.
