Is GEO more effective than SEO?

Our evidence does not establish that GEO is more effective than SEO. Our September Index recorded 1642 checked-vendor name appearances across 420 Perplexity answers on 22 September 2026. That count concerns named suppliers, rather than site visits or purchases.

What we measured

Measured. The Index release and method cover fourteen software categories, ten fixed buyer questions per category and three Perplexity returns per question. Summing checked-vendor presence gives 1642 appearances across the 420 answers. Multiple suppliers can appear in one answer. The panel contains no controlled SEO-versus-GEO treatment or sales attribution.

Reported. Google's website guidance for AI features, read on 29 October 2026, says SEO fundamentals remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode. It requires indexed, snippet-eligible pages for supporting links, without extra AI-specific technical requirements. It also places traffic from AI features within Search Console's Web performance data and names Google Analytics for conversions and time spent on site.

Reasoned. Our Perplexity name count and a site's Search Console click count have different numerators and populations. Calling the larger number more effective would compare suppliers named in a repeated-question panel with people clicking a site's search result.

What this means for you

Read the three-return CRM row. For the question about a small sales team that is scaling, Perplexity's three returns contain thirteen checked-name appearances. HubSpot CRM, Pipedrive, Salesforce Sales Cloud and Zoho CRM each appear in all three returns; Freshsales appears in one. These are software-buyer answers. The row shows how an answer-level count and a count of named suppliers produce different totals even before any website-performance comparison.

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the published website guide names Google Analytics for conversions and time spent on site, alongside Search Console's Web traffic report. If your intended result is a completed enquiry, the conversion record concerns that event; the CRM row concerns words in an answer. Time spent on site describes another observation after a person reaches the page. Those are the specific performance fields Google's guide identifies for a site owner.
