What does information gain mean in SEO?
Information gain in content publishing means useful additional information relative to a stated comparison; an SEO novelty assessment is not automatically a measured ranking signal.
A new turn of phrase is not necessarily new information. A source can add value by exposing a denominator, correcting an error or documenting an observation that earlier pages did not contain. The comparison determines what is additional.
The library’s SEO, AEO and GEO content-choice guidance addresses practical selection. This definition separates editorial usefulness from claims about a search-engine scoring system.
Which source history can we establish?
The phrase has technical uses outside SEO. For the search-specific meaning, an inspectable primary record is Google’s patent application published 5 November 2020, later granted as US11354342B2 on 7 June 2022. The filing date shown is 18 October 2018. Filing, publication and grant are different dates; the filing date alone does not establish when the document became public. [Carbune & Anders, patent record].
The patent describes selecting further documents by information additional to material already presented to a user. Its contextual comparison is more specific than a universal originality score assigned permanently to every page. Deployment is not established by a patent.
How vendor blogs use the term
Animalz’s article displays an original publication date of 28 June 2022 and an update of 14 November 2025. It treats information gain as differentiation through additive material and acknowledges uncertainty about deployment of the patented system. Because the current text is refreshed, we cannot assume every present sentence appeared in the original version. [Law, refreshed by Wahl].
Ahrefs published Louise Linehan’s explanation on 20 August 2026. It similarly distinguishes a page’s additional information from confirmation that Google uses a literal information-gain score. These are documented vendor usages, not independent disclosures of Google’s production ranking machinery. [Linehan, 2026].
Those dated records are the earliest public search-specific records we verified here. They do not establish who originated the broader technical expression.
Can a content team measure it?
An editorial assessment can specify a comparison set and list what a page adds. For a software comparison, that might be a reproducible compatibility test, an accessible original dataset or a clearly documented limitation missing from competing explanations. Describe the contribution rather than assigning an unexplained percentage to novelty.
If a scoring system compares documents, publish enough of its definition to interpret the result: reference corpus, document dates, unit, overlap rule and handling of contradictory claims. A result depends on what was compared. A page can be additional to an introductory guide while repeating a specialist source.
Novelty also needs a quality check. An invented statistic is new text but poor evidence. A verified correction can be valuable without being a discovery. The useful standard is whether the addition helps the reader make a sounder judgment and whether its claims can be checked.
What changes when someone claims an SEO effect?
An editorial score and a measured visibility outcome require separate validation. Observing originality does not establish causation. Stronger brands, better distribution, topic selection and other differences can accompany that original work.
For an intervention, preserve the starting page and comparison conditions, specify the changed content and observe the chosen outcome. Record whether the outcome is organic position, answer-level naming, citation frequency or something else. Do not borrow a percentage from one outcome to promise an improvement in another.
Google’s people-first content guidance asks about original information and value beyond other results. That supports a useful editorial question. It does not give a publisher an information-gain meter or establish a guaranteed increase in citations for adding a chart. [Google Search Central, helpful content guidance].
Carbune and Anders’s patent abstract refers to “documents that were previously viewed by the user”. The comparison depends on that user’s previous information; the patent does not prove a universal production ranking score. [US11354342B2, abstract; verified 30 October 2026].
You can ask what new evidence a page supplies.
What our own data shows
We have no measurement on this point: an information-gain score or a visibility effect from publishing these research pages. Our research contributes inspectable reanalyses and registered descriptive studies. We call their outputs by what they measure, such as page-signal class shares and source-class citation shares. We have no measured information-gain score or demonstrated citation uplift from publishing them.
For example, Study 2 distinguishes its frozen source classification from a later host audit. Publishing that difference supplies evidence about classification sensitivity. It does not establish that a search engine will reward the page for being more original.
