Is GEO a separate skill from SEO?

Our CRM (customer relationship management) study recorded Freshsales in 9 of 30 Perplexity answers on 22 September 2026. Understanding that release method needs answer-reading and measurement skills as well as knowledge of searchable pages. GEO (generative engine optimization) therefore describes some additional tasks, but it does not establish a wholly separate set of Google ranking rules or make ordinary SEO (search engine optimization) knowledge obsolete.

Observed answers on stated dates, not a ranking.

Buyers also call this AEO (answer engine optimization) or AI search visibility.

What we measured

Measured. The CRM CSV records Freshsales naming separately by engine. The nine Perplexity observations came from ten buyer questions with three repeats each. They are product names in retained answers, not nine visits, nine customers or nine successful optimizations.

One Perplexity answer captured on 22 September 2026 includes this wording:

Pipeline-focused sales tools like Pipedrive, Freshsales, Close, and Nutshell

Reading the result requires someone to preserve the engine and base, inspect the original question and distinguish a checked name from a cited source. A person can understand a canonical link perfectly and still misreport these nine names as an audience metric. Those are different kinds of review error.

Reported. Google’s AI-feature documentation, read on 30 October 2026, says existing SEO fundamentals remain relevant. It does not make the industry labels SEO, AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO into three independently demonstrated ranking systems.

Reasoned. Treat GEO as a set of responsibilities you can describe and test. Some involve established site work; others involve collecting and interpreting answer evidence. A job title alone will not show which of those responsibilities a person can perform.

What this means for you

Freshsales appears in all three Perplexity returns for reporting and forecasting, as well as all three mid-market returns. In the first reporting answer, its row describes built-in reporting and AI insights and attaches numbered third-party references. Reading that row is an answer-analysis task: the reviewer has to retain the reporting question and the qualification, rather than replace it with a general claim that Freshsales won the panel.

Trace the reporting row. Its numbered destinations include a TechWire Asia reporting article and a Providerly comparison, whereas the mid-market answer's source list includes other directories and comparison publishers. The skill is recognizing which source belongs to which claim and question. These retained links identify where the answer pointed; they do not supply a new hands-on test of Freshsales forecasting.

Google's AI guide adds a different, specific page condition: a supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet. An SEO reviewer can examine that eligibility on a proposed reporting page. An answer reviewer still needs to check whether the saved response described built-in reporting, forecasting or another function. A snippet-eligible page and a correctly described reporting feature are separate items in that exercise.
